Portland Center Stage survived a financial crisis that nearly shut it down. Now the company is throwing a party.

The theater opens its 20th season at The Armory on Friday, Oct. 2, with Kate Hamill's farcical adaptation of Pride & Prejudice, directed by Artistic Director Marissa Wolf.

The production runs through Sunday, Oct. 25, at 128 NW 11th Ave.

PCS dubbed the 2026–27 lineup the "Emerald Season," built around the theme "Then. Now. Next." The celebration comes after the company's emergency fundraising campaign hit its $8 million goal this summer, plus $2 million in reserves, as first reported by Willamette Week. Oregon Arts Watch reported the financial crisis "could have resulted in a permanent closure."

Hamill, who specializes in feminist adaptations of classic literature, previously wrote Sense & Sensibility for PCS in 2019 and Ms. Holmes & Ms. Watson – Apt. 2B in 2023. Her Pride & Prejudice turns Austen's period drama into full-on farce: actors play multiple roles across gender and age, personalities balloon into slapstick caricatures, and modern tunes sneak onto the piano. Actor Michael O'Connell plays both Mr. Bennet and Charlotte.

Wolf, now in her eighth year leading PCS, told Willamette Week that Hamill "is a perfect inheritor of Austen's work. She honors Austen's writing and pulls it into a contemporary lens we'll understand."

Wolf said the dual casting requires an actor who can handle Charlotte's "real emotional arc" alongside "the high comedy of Mr. Bennet." The production keeps Austen's world intact with period costumes, set pieces and furniture, even as the script pushes Elizabeth Bennet to reject the idea of marriage from the start.

PCS Literary Manager and Dramaturg Kamilah Bush framed the season in broader terms in a Sept. 22 piece in Oregon Arts Watch. "The question 'who will feel seen by this play and how can we invite them into The Armory?' is at the core of our selection process," Bush said.

Tickets run $25 to $100, with pay-what-you-will and $5 Arts for All options. Previews begin Sunday, Sept. 27. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, with 2 p.m. matinees on Saturdays, Sundays and select Thursdays. The production is listed as all ages.

A free pre-show event on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 5 p.m. celebrates Nigerian culture with Afrobeat band Jujuba, Naija cuisine from Dee-Meta and beer from Deschutes Brewery. A BIPOC Affinity Night follows Saturday, Oct. 10, at 5 p.m. with R&B act West Note, local vendors and complimentary beverages.

The Armory is also hosting a 20th Anniversary exhibit in the PGE Gallery featuring archival photos, show posters, props and costumes from PCS's two decades in the building.
