Portland Arts Week will return June 22-27, 2027, with a new Art × Food theme, the event's steering committee announced Sept. 29. The second edition follows an inaugural run that organizers called a breakthrough for the city's downtown recovery.
The first Portland Arts Week ran July 9-12 across galleries, theaters and public spaces citywide under the theme Art × Sports. About 3,000 people attended the Pearl District Gallery Walk, and downtown foot traffic rose 11% during the event week, according to the steering committee's release. Some galleries reported welcoming more visitors than they had ever seen.
Elizabeth Leach, founder of the Elizabeth Leach Gallery at 417 N.W. 9th Ave. and chair of the 12-member steering committee, conceived the event to help Portland shake off the pandemic slowdown. The Art × Sports theme grew from a conversation between Leach and Jim Etzel, CEO of Sport Oregon, a nonprofit that promotes athletics statewide.
"In 2025, it was still deadly quiet in downtown and the Pearl District," Leach told Oregon ArtsWatch. "I wanted to do something that people could get involved with to celebrate the culture of the city, which is amazing."
The four days included a two-day symposium at the Portland Art Museum and the Tomorrow Theater, a Gallery Walk in the Pearl District, events at PICA and the Gerding Theater at the Armory, and sports games in the North and South Park Blocks. Participating galleries hosted sports-themed exhibitions that stayed up for a month afterward. The event also drew national media attention, including coverage by Jason Rosenfeld in The Brooklyn Rail.
Arts Week's results fit a broader downtown rebound. Pedestrian visits topped 3 million in both July and August, the first months to hit that mark since 2020, according to Downtown Portland Clean & Safe's summer foot traffic report.
More than 22.2 million pedestrian visits were recorded from January through August, up 3.6% over the same period in 2025. In August, Saturday activity reached 92% of 2019 levels and Sunday hit 91%.
The report credited festivals, cultural gatherings and visitor activity for the gains. Weekday office-worker traffic, however, remains roughly 50% below 2019 levels, the report found. The Oregonian noted that nearly all the growth has come from visitors, not returning office workers.
For 2027, the steering committee said the Art × Food theme will bring together artists, chefs, growers and makers. Portland Arts Week is organized under the Oregon Alliance of the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA), the regional chapter whose mission includes promoting the work of women artists.
