Lincoln senior Andy Krapf, committed to play Division I soccer at UCLA, headlines 14 Portland-area players named to a statewide list of Oregon's best 6A boys soccer midfielders.
The Oregonian/OregonLive published the list on Tuesday, Oct. 20, compiled from coach nominations across the state.
Central Catholic led all Portland programs with six players selected. Lincoln and Franklin each placed multiple midfielders, and Cleveland, Benson and David Douglas added one apiece.
Central Catholic loads the midfield
Central Catholic coach Leo Poliakoff nominated six midfielders: seniors Jamaury Axley, Griffin Chandler, Hendrik Hagedorn and Miguel Kolp, plus juniors Will Cratsenberg and Bennett Lind.
Cratsenberg, a team captain in his third varsity season, leads the Rams in goal contributions with five goals, Poliakoff told The Oregonian.
Chandler's inclusion stands out for another reason. Poliakoff described him as showing "great skill and tempo for a player coming off back-to-back ACL injuries."
Axley (four goals, three assists) and Kolp (four goals) give the Rams attacking punch from the wings. Lind has three assists.
The Rams sit at 6-3-4 and dropped out of the OSAA coaches poll released Oct. 20 after previously sharing the No. 9 spot.
Lincoln's Krapf headed to UCLA
Krapf plays holding central midfield for the Cardinals. Lincoln coach Alejandro Barnatan told The Oregonian that Krapf's defensive reading of the game is unmatched, calling him "a black hole defensively" who would lead the state in tackles, headers and interceptions if those stats were tracked. Krapf has one assist but carries a 4.0 GPA and speaks multiple languages, according to Barnatan.
Senior Quinn Hanson joins Krapf on the list. Barnatan described Hanson as Krapf's partner in the holding midfield, crediting him with providing structure and protection for the back line. Hanson is a team captain taking full International Baccalaureate courses.
Lincoln entered the OSAA coaches poll at No. 4 on Oct. 20 with a 9-1-3 record.
Cleveland, Franklin, Benson and David Douglas represented
Cleveland junior Clyde Mashburn anchors the Warriors' defensive midfield. Cleveland coach Nick Yoder told The Oregonian that Mashburn steps into challenges as well as anyone and credited him with helping the Warriors earn eight shutouts.
Cleveland sits at No. 2 in the Oct. 20 OSAA coaches poll at 10-0-3, trailing only Jesuit.
Franklin placed three midfielders: senior Asher Wright, junior Emmett Holt-Dupey and senior captain Leaf Brockmeyer. Franklin coach Will Justice told The Oregonian that Wright is tied for the most assists in the PIL. Holt-Dupey has two assists from a defensive midfield role, and Brockmeyer serves as the primary ball winner in central midfield. Franklin is 8-4-1 and, like Central Catholic, dropped from the coaches poll after sharing the No. 9 spot.
Benson junior Silas Frings, an exchange student from Germany, has five goals. Benson coach Jose Torres praised his ball control and vision in the survey.
David Douglas junior Lamphong Tran rounds out the Portland-area selections. David Douglas coach Logan Marquardt told The Oregonian that Tran provides a calming presence and switches between defensive and attacking midfield roles throughout games.
The OSAA coaches poll noted one final set of polls would be released the following week, with the regular season winding down ahead of the OSAA playoffs.
