A new aperitivo bar is opening inside an existing retail shop on Northwest Lovejoy Street, adding a sip-and-shop concept to Portland's Alphabet District.

Bar Noto, a wine-and-snacks bar built inside the Studio Noto concept store at 1932 NW Lovejoy St., opens Thursday, July 9, with a launch party from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The bar is owned by Gloria Noto and her wife, Azsa West.

A liquor license application filed with the Portland Police Bureau's Liquor License Division lists the business as Bar Noto, according to What Now Portland.

The concept borrows from Italian aperitivo culture, where drinkers gather for a light glass of wine and a small bite before dinner.

"It's very, very lightweight," Noto told What Now Portland. "Kind of a place to have a drink before you go have dinner, sort of thing."

The menu leans on Oregon wineries, with red, white, orange, and sparkling wines alongside a few Italian selections. Classic spritzes, aperitifs, and non-alcoholic options round out the drink list.

Food stays simple: chips, crackers, cheeses, olives, tinned fish, and a "Charcuterie Chips" plate that Noto calls her favorite item on the menu.

Noto, who also runs the gender-inclusive beauty brand NOTO Botanics and the Studio Noto shop, designed the bar space herself. Local artists' work hangs on the walls and is available for purchase. The logo features a small angel holding a wine glass and a shopping bag.

The hybrid model means the retail floor stays open throughout the day. Minors are welcome with an adult during daytime hours because the space operates as a shop. Aperitivo service runs from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Regular hours will be Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Noto envisions the bar as a place for leisurely, phone-free socializing, telling Bridgetown Bites she pictures guests playing chess and people-watching from the front windows.

Bar Noto's opening night party is Thursday, July 9, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 1932 NW Lovejoy St., Portland, OR 97209.
