Diego Chará, the Portland Timbers' captain and longest-tenured player, announced Monday, Oct. 26, that he will retire after the 2027 MLS Sprint Season.

The 40-year-old Colombian midfielder broke the news at a press conference alongside head coach Martí Cifuentes.

The Sprint Season features a shortened 14-game regular season running February through April 2027, with playoffs and MLS Cup in May. It will be Chará's 17th and final season in Portland.

"At some point, the body says, 'OK, it's enough,'" Chará said at the press conference, as reported by KGW. "I think that I'm getting that moment and for me I think it's the right time to do it."

Chará signed as the Timbers' first-ever Designated Player when the club entered MLS in 2011. He has since helped Portland win the 2015 MLS Cup, three Western Conference championships in 2015, 2018 and 2021, and the 2020 MLS is Back Tournament.

He holds the MLS record for most regular-season appearances with one club, according to the Timbers' official announcement. He is the only player in league history to spend 16 seasons with a single team. He ranks sixth all time in MLS games played and fourth among field players.

This season alone, Chará reached his 500th appearance across all competitions for Portland and logged his 400th MLS regular-season start on Feb. 21 against Columbus. He is just the ninth player in league history to hit that mark and the first to record all 400 starts with one club, according to his MLS player profile.

Chará also became the first player to appear in an MLS match at age 40 or older this season, on April 11 against LAFC. On April 4, he picked up his 124th career yellow card at Vancouver, setting the league's all-time record for cautions.

Timbers owner Merritt Paulson called Chará "the heartbeat of the Portland Timbers since we entered MLS in 2011" in the club's statement. Paulson said he would enjoy every remaining moment before Chará "takes his place in our Ring of Honor."

General manager Ned Grabavoy said the upcoming Sprint Season would be "a fitting farewell tour for a true MLS and Club Legend." Cifuentes, in his first year coaching the Timbers, said Chará's impact on the club is "absolutely unmistakable" and praised his standard of "determination, consistency and respect."

Born in Cali, Colombia, Chará played for Deportes Quindío, América de Cali and Deportes Tolima before joining Portland. He was capped twice by the Colombian national team. His younger brother, Yimmi Chará, also played for the Timbers between 2020 and 2023. Chará became a U.S. citizen in August 2019.

Chará reflected on his time in Portland, telling reporters he grew up with the team and cherished "too many good faces and a lot of good memories."

The 2027 Sprint Season opens in February, with each team playing seven home and seven away matches against conference opponents. The top eight teams in each conference advance to single-elimination playoffs, culminating in the 2027 MLS Cup in May.
