A free arts market with live DJ sets takes over a small traffic island in Mount Scott-Arleta on Saturday and Saturday, Aug. 8–9, bringing Portland-based musicians and local makers to a stretch of outer Southeast that rarely lands on the city's cultural radar.

The Arts and Crafts Kaleidoscope runs 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days at Arleta Triangle Square, the PBOT-managed plaza at SE 72nd Avenue and Woodstock Boulevard.

Organizer Isaac Gervais, a Mount Scott-Arleta resident and artisan, revived the market after its previous coordinator stepped away. He runs it through an independent committee focused on working artists and nearby residents.

"There used to be a market that was here, and then the person that was doing it decided they couldn't carry on anymore; and since I live in the neighborhood, I wanted to keep that going," Gervais told The Bee.

This is the market's third season. Colorful canopies fill the triangle with booths selling handcrafted ceramics, jewelry, textiles and wood products. Gervais himself vends wood and mixed-media items through his company The Native Gift, alongside pieces from Navajo, Zuni and Santa Domingo makers, East PDX News reported.

Vendor Gayla Assouan sells garments through her company The Mustard Seed, noting about 90 percent of her pieces are made locally. A food cart and beer garden round out the afternoon.

Portland-based DJs and acoustic musicians provide the soundtrack, though specific names for the Aug. 8–9 lineup have not been announced.

Two more weekends are scheduled: Sept. 12–13 and Oct. 10–11, same location, same hours.
