Grant's Philly Cheesesteaks is back. The East Portland sandwich shop on Sandy Blvd. reopened July 21, after nearly a year dark following the death of founder Diane Kay Schuler.

Travis Lee Bloom, Schuler's son and a 13-year veteran behind the counter, is running the restaurant as co-owner alongside Deena Michelle McCants.

The pair formed a new LLC, Grant's Philly Cheesesteaks LLC, on June 8, according to Oregon Secretary of State records cited by Bridgetown Bites, which first reported the reopening Tuesday, July 28.

Schuler opened the restaurant on February 3, 2003, building it into a 23-year neighborhood fixture known for sirloin steak sandwiches on Amoroso rolls. She died in August 2025 due to declining health, and the shop went on hiatus. By December 2025, the phone was out of service and online listings showed a permanent closure, as Bridgetown Bites reported at the time.

"With the sudden passing, we weren't quite sure what we had to deal with," Bloom told Bridgetown Bites. "Obviously there was everything to handle with her estate, and then the business kind of came second. It wasn't necessarily left in a manner to where I could continue on with it."

Bloom said he spent about three months, from early March through the July 21 reopening, working to restart operations. That meant establishing the new LLC after the previous entity, Grant's Philly Cheese Steak LLC, was administratively dissolved in March 2026. He also reconnected with vendors and spread the word through Facebook groups.

The restaurant's NW 23rd Avenue location, which operated for about 10 years, closed December 29, 2024. That space was taken over by Baka Umai ramen, which opened there in February 2026.

Grant Schuler, the restaurant's namesake, is no longer involved with the business, Bloom said.

One notable change: Grant's is open Monday through Saturday. The shop previously closed Saturdays because Grant Schuler, a Seventh Day Adventist, observed the Sabbath. With new ownership, Saturday hours are now part of the regular schedule.

The menu remains unchanged, according to the restaurant's website. Sandwiches feature thinly sliced or chopped sirloin steak or chicken breast on Amoroso rolls with homemade potato chips.

Five cheese options remain: Provolone, Tillamook Cheddar, Philadelphia Cream Cheese, American, and Kraft Cheez Whiz. A half sandwich runs $7.25; a whole is $13.50.

Bloom said the team will monitor customer traffic and may adjust the schedule if demand warrants it. The restaurant is closed Sundays. Reach them at (503) 252-8012.
