Behind the restrooms at Republic Cafe, a century-old Chinese restaurant in Old Town Chinatown, there's a door most diners never notice.

Every Tuesday, that door opens into Headspace Circus, a weekly underground rave where the dress code leans clown and the DJ sets match whatever theme organizer Kiyoki Moon dreamed up that week.

Cybergoth. Candyland. All nine layers of Dante's Inferno. "We made it through all nine layers," Moon told Willamette Week for its Best of Portland 2026 feature, published Wednesday, July 22.

The path in is part of the show. Attendees walk past the host stand, through the dining room, through Ming Lounge, and find the hidden entrance near the bathrooms. Moon described the experience as "kind of crazy as hell."

Moon connected with the venue through Heather Ragonese, a Ming Lounge bartender she met on the set of one of Ragonese's indie films.

That shoot involved a clown-and-mime rivalry and, apparently, dragging mimes around on leashes. The concept for clown-themed DJ nights in a historic restaurant followed naturally.

Republic Cafe has operated under the Mui family's ownership since 1922. The building sits within the Portland New Chinatown–Japantown Historic District and landed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Over the decades, the restaurant has hosted Louis Armstrong, Harry Belafonte, and Shaquille O'Neal, according to OregonLive.

Moon frames the clowning as defiance. "There's so much push to conform and be this submissive person to this system, as a woman and in general," she told Willamette Week. "I feel like being a clown is the opposite of that."

The event arrives as Portland's independent gathering spaces thin out. Roughly 20 notable bars have closed citywide since fall 2025, according to OregonLive.

A National Independent Venue Association report released in October 2025 found only 37% of Oregon's independent venues turned a profit in 2024. Headspace Circus avoids one common pressure point: it nests inside an existing business rather than carrying its own lease.

The next Headspace Circus is Tuesday, July 28, at Republic Cafe. Theme announcements appear on Instagram (@headspace.circus).
