Georgia Cloepfil played professional soccer on six teams in six countries, earning $500 a month in Sweden and $1,200 a month in Lithuania.

Now the Oregon native has written a memoir about it, and she'll discuss it on Portland community radio July 16, three days before the World Cup final.

Cloepfil will appear on KBOO's "Between the Covers" program from 11 a.m. to noon. The monthly show, hosted by Gary Baysinger on 90.7 FM and streaming at kboo.fm, focuses on books and authors.

"I grew up near the University of Portland, which was home to legends — Christine Sinclair, Megan Rapinoe, these women were playing there, and I went to every game with my little team," Cloepfil told The Cut.

After graduating from Macalester College, where she played soccer, Cloepfil spent six years as a professional in Australia, Sweden, South Korea, Lithuania, Norway, and with Seattle Reign FC, where she trained alongside Rapinoe, according to the Whitman Wire student newspaper.

In South Korea, she earned $37,000 a year but played in stadiums built for 50,000 fans with sometimes only about 100 people in the stands.

Her memoir, "The Striker and the Clock," mirrors the structure of a match: 90 short passages for the 90 minutes of play, plus sections for halftime and stoppage time.

Published by Riverhead Books in 2024, the 208-page book drew praise from New Yorker sports writer Louisa Thomas, who wrote in a cover blurb that Cloepfil produced "a nimble, breathtaking book about the beautiful game, and about her beautiful, brutal life playing it."

Cloepfil now works as an adjunct professor of rhetoric, writing, and public discourse and as assistant women's soccer coach at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, where she's been since 2021. Her writing has appeared in The Yale Review, The New York Times Magazine, and n+1.

She is working on a second book about language acquisition and her daughter, according to the Whitman Wire.

The 2026 World Cup final kicks off July 19 at 2 p.m. Pacific at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The four semifinalists — France, Spain, England, and Argentina — play Tuesday, July 14 (Spain vs. France) and Wednesday, July 15 (Argentina vs. England). Argentina is the defending champion.
