A West Hills winery that opened in early 2022 beat out top restaurants across California, New York, and other premier wine regions to claim the No. 1 spot in USA Today's 2026 10 Best Readers' Choice Awards for best winery restaurant in the country.
Amaterra Winery, at 8150 SW Swede Hill Dr., earned the top ranking in results published Wednesday, July 29. A panel of travel and hospitality experts selected nominees, and public voting determined the winner.
"It's extremely exciting," Mark Beringer, Amaterra's director of operations, told KPTV. "For such a young winery and restaurant to be recognized with such an honor means we've been doing something right."
Oregon claimed two of the top three spots. Farm & Forage at Sokol Blosser Winery in Dayton landed at No. 3, behind only Amaterra and Bolero Restaurante in Temecula, California.
Local sourcing, national stage
Executive Chef Jami Flatt runs the kitchen, sourcing ingredients from Beaverton farmers markets and local vendors to build a Pacific Northwest-focused menu.
Dishes range from pan-seared scallops and a Wagyu smash burger to antipasti boards with seasonal cheeses and Sasanian caviar served with housemade potato chips and crème fraîche, according to USA Today's review.
The property sits on 12 acres of vineyard in Portland's West Hills, producing roughly 10,000 cases a year, predominantly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Amaterra's 2022 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir earned a Gold Medal and 96 points from the Decanter World Wine Awards in July.
Growing Portland footprint
The award caps a busy stretch for the Portland-based Amaterra Hospitality Group, led by CEO and co-founder Marcus Breuer. In July, the company acquired RiverPlace Hotel on Portland's Southwest Waterfront for $11 million, according to KPTV.
CoralTree Hospitality is managing the property, per industry trade reporting.
The group's portfolio now spans three properties: the West Hills winery, Amaterra Kitchen + Social Club at 909 NW Bond St. in downtown Bend, and RiverPlace Hotel.
The national recognition adds to a streak of local wins. Portland Business Journal readers named Amaterra the city's most popular restaurant in 2025, and Eater listed it among Portland's best restaurants with a view that same year.
With RiverPlace Hotel now under its umbrella, Amaterra Hospitality Group holds two Portland properties and a growing stake in the city's food-and-beverage landscape.
