A debut EP that samples 1980s cop-show dialogue, loops Iggy Pop singing about getting stoned, and layers police sirens over EBM beats dropped June 12 from a Portland collective that will literally give you the record for free if you're broke.

Punkers, the first release from Portland DJ duo Freak Out!, landed on Bed of Roses, the local label collective that has operated out of Portland since 2012.

The five-track, 33-minute EP fuses 1990s electronica, punk-adjacent dance, and big-beat sample collage into something the Portland Mercury's Ryan J. Prado reviewed favorably in his July 17 Spin Cycle column, comparing the duo to Daft Punk and Celldöd.

Freak Out! is Jonny "Gumar" Tutt, who performs as Break Mode, and Nate, who performs as Palm Pilot.

Tutt has been based in Portland for over 17 years and previously worked at legendary Olympia indie label K Records.

He manages the Bed of Roses collective, which includes MagicPink, Kitchen DJ, Cole Baby, and Wormbox and now counts 19 releases on Bandcamp.

The title track opens with a sampled conversation about punk rock slam dancing from the TV show CHiPs, then erupts into staccato synths, police sirens, and layered punk audio quotes. "Lucky Stoned" runs more than seven minutes of psychedelic slacker-pop built on Iggy Pop's "Funtime," centering the line "I'm gonna get stoned and run around." The nine-minute closer "The Answer" mashes Euro-dance, electro, and liquid pop into a single extended ride.

In a May 2025 interview with Test Pressing, Tutt described the duo's approach: "We like to ride the wave where genres collide and create euphoric moments that can be exciting or excite us at least. We hope the dancefloor is along for the ride."
