Portland doesn't have a single World Cup match on its schedule this week, but the city's soccer bars are drawing packed crowds anyway.

Away Days Brewing and GOL PDX, both based in Southeast Portland, have pulled in big turnouts since the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicked off June 11. With the quarterfinals beginning July 10, the two venues are gearing up for the tournament's final stretch.

Away Days co-owners Niki Diamond and Pete Hoppins, British transplants who opened the brewery in 2019 after running the beloved Toffee Club, didn't stop at their Brooklyn neighborhood taproom on SE Cora Street. For the World Cup, they transformed the historic U.S. National Bank Building at 326 SW Broadway into a dedicated fan fest.

The 1917 Corinthian-columned hall, which ceased banking operations in 2023, now features a giant screen, a pizza parlor, foosball tables, and a beer bar. Tickets run $10 per match, with a limited "Golden Ticket" tournament pass at $450.

The downtown venue was packed for the U.S. Men's National Team's group-stage match against Turkey. An early American goal sent a roar echoing off the building's high decorative ceiling, according to The Oregonian.

The Americans' run ended July 7 with a 4-1 loss to Belgium in Seattle. Both bars are scheduled to show every remaining match through the July 19 final.

A few miles east on Hawthorne Boulevard, GOL PDX co-owner Peter Mahr has adjusted hours to show every tournament match. The Buckman neighborhood bar at 1739 SE Hawthorne Blvd opens at 7 a.m. on weekends and one hour before kickoff on Mondays.

Hundreds attended a watch party for the Mexico vs. South Africa group-stage match, according to a Wikipedia entry citing local coverage. Mahr has been offering drink specials tied to the countries playing.

Mahr, who also works as a physician at Multnomah County's Southeast Health Center, bought the former 4-4-2 bar in 2019 and reopened it as Gol on February 27, 2020. His timing was brutal. Portland's first confirmed COVID-19 case came the next day.

Six years later, the bar has earned national recognition. GOL PDX ranked No. 21 on Yelp's 2026 list of the nation's 100 best sports bars and was runner-up for Best Soccer Bar in USA Today's Readers' Choice Awards.

"You get people who are coming in that are from all over the world just to watch their team," Mahr told the Southeast Examiner. "That's what we like about the place, it creates that mixing of people coming together."

GOL is also an official pub partner of the Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns, hosting watch parties for both clubs year-round.

Diamond and Hoppins, who emigrated from England roughly a decade before opening Away Days, built the brewery around soccer culture. The taproom hosts watch parties, a run club, and soccer club events alongside English ales and European-style lagers.

The quarterfinals resume Friday, July 11, with Spain vs. Belgium at noon PT, followed Saturday, July 12, by Norway vs. England at 2 p.m. PT and Argentina vs. Switzerland at 6 p.m. PT. Semifinals are set for Tuesday, July 14, and Wednesday, July 15, with the final on Sunday, July 19, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
