Portland families can walk into a world-class art exhibition for free starting Friday, Aug. 28, when the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at Portland State University reopens with more than 150 works by London-based sculptor Anish Kapoor.

The show, "Anish Kapoor: Dissolving Margins," is the artist's first retrospective dedicated to his printmaking practice, according to PSU. It spans a decade of prints exploring form, color and variation, plus one of Kapoor's signature mirror sculptures: "Untitled (Hex Mirror)," a stainless steel and resin piece nearly 5½ feet across.

Kapoor is best known for "Cloud Gate," the reflective bean-shaped sculpture in Chicago's Millennium Park. He represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1990 and won the Turner Prize in 1991.

The museum at 1855 SW Broadway, on the South Park Blocks, has offered free admission to all visitors since it opened in November 2019. The Family Day on Saturday, Aug. 29, requires no tickets or registration. Starting at 11 a.m., families can browse the prints, try all-ages crafting stations, and join a free children's storytime with face painting outside at the PSU Farmers Market. Children must be accompanied by a guardian.

"I cannot imagine anyone visiting this exhibition not being swept away with emotion as these colorful prints and sculptures challenge our perceptions and transport us into Kapoor's extraordinary vision!" collector Jordan Schnitzer said in the museum's announcement.

Schnitzer, a Portland-based real estate developer and ARTnews Top 200 Art Collector, began collecting contemporary prints in 1988. He and the Harold & Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation funded the exhibition and related programming. The show was organized by the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at Washington State University and curated by Ryan Hardesty.

Later this fall, the museum will host a free guided tour on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 1 to 2 p.m. and a public reception on Thursday, Oct. 22, at 4 p.m. The exhibition runs through Saturday, Dec. 5.

Museum hours are Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Thursdays until 7 p.m.) and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Sunday and Monday.
