A new Sellwood shop will sell handmade flour tortillas when Hecho de Mano Tortilleria opens Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 4270 SE Milwaukie.

Owners Kevin Orona and German Olivas moved from Odessa, Texas, to Portland in 2020.

They found fresh corn tortillas around town, with Three Sisters Nixtamal a favorite, but fresh flour tortillas were nowhere to be found.

"We started feeling homesick over the lack of access to fresh flour tortillas," Orona told the Portland Mercury.

The tortillas are vegan and preservative-free, made with four ingredients: whole wheat flour from Bob's Red Mill, water, salt and cane shortening.

They last a week or more at room temperature, up to a month refrigerated and even longer frozen, according to the Mercury.

At opening, the menu includes regular and taco-sized tortillas plus grab-and-go sides like shredded beef, beans, rice and potatoes with chiles.

A family meal pack with tortillas, beans, rice, papas con chile, carne desebrada and four agua frescas costs $55. Red and green chile tortillas and a beef tallow version are planned for later.

Orona said $1 bean and cheese burritos are also under consideration, according to Hoodline. He called the price point a debate between him and his business-minded husband.

Before launching a business, the couple made tortillas for Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence Day parties for family, friends and neighbors. Sometimes a few dozen. Sometimes hundreds. When people kept asking where to buy them, Orona and Olivas took the hint and began selling at the Sellwood and Woodstock farmers markets in May.

The brick-and-mortar shop sits across the street from Away Days Brewing, where Orona works. Beyond the storefront, the couple said they are talking with local markets about carrying the tortillas and hope to supply barbecue spots and Mexican restaurants.

Hecho de Mano is open Thursdays and Fridays from noon to 7 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
