A 1920s-themed speakeasy opened Saturday, Aug. 29, in the Central Eastside space that housed Portland's only lesbian bar until last fall.

Rose City Social Club held its grand opening at 203 S.E. Grand Ave., inside the historic Osborn Hotel.

Owner Anthon Nosen runs the split-level bar with his wife, Jessica, OregonLive reported. The street level serves as a casual Italian eatery, with Nosen's son Skyler leading the kitchen. A basement bar bathed in red light serves craft cocktails and smaller plates.

"We took a lot of influence from larger New York, and even European, speakeasies," Nosen told OregonLive. "The lighting, it's very intimate."

Nosen built fictional Prohibition-era lore around the venue, decorating the brick walls with faux mug shots and fabricated newspaper clippings.

Some fixtures from the building's previous life remain, including ornate hanging lamps and curved leather booths.

That previous life carries weight in Portland.

Doc Marie's opened at the same address in July 2022. The bar was named for Dr. Marie Equi, an early 20th-century Oregon physician, activist and out lesbian. It billed itself as a "lesbian bar for everyone," according to OregonLive's November 2025 roundup of Portland restaurant closures.

Doc Marie's closed on Halloween 2025 after three years. In an October 2025 social media statement, the bar said it did not have the finances to keep its doors open, calling it "a devastating year for small businesses and for our community."

The closure was not isolated. Willamette Week reported that Doc Marie's was the fifth LGBTQ+ bar to close in Portland within a year, representing roughly a third of the city's queer bars at the time. Other closures in that stretch included Crush Bar, which had operated for more than 20 years, and Scandals, which had been open 46 years.

The losses have continued. Approximately 20 notable bars have closed in Portland since fall 2025, according to OregonLive's July 2026 reporting on the trend.

Rose City Social Club is open 4 p.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday and 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
