The Crystal Ballroom is getting a dose of genre-bending bass wizardry on November 19, when two-time Grammy winner Thundercat rolls through Portland on his Distracted AF Tour.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m., show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets run $57 to $198.80 through Etix. All ages.

Stephen Bruner — the Los Angeles bassist who picked up his instrument at age 4 in a household where his father drummed for the Temptations — is touring behind Distracted, his fifth studio album and first in six years.

Released April 3 on Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder label, the record features A$AP Rocky, WILLOW, Tame Impala, Channel Tres, Lil Yachty, and a posthumous collaboration with the late Mac Miller.

That Miller track, "She Knows Too Much," originated from an unfinished Greg Kurstin session recorded before Miller's death in 2018 and was completed with the blessing of his estate.

"It feels like somewhere between the set of the movie 'They Live' and, like, a really bad drug trip," Thundercat told NPR in April about the album's themes of technology and digital-era disconnection.

Thundercat played bass across Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly and won a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Performance for "These Walls" in 2016. His 2020 album It Is What It Is took Best Progressive R&B Album at the 2021 Grammys.

Emerging artist Fera opens. The Distracted AF Tour kicks off October 2 in Miami Beach and wraps December 5 at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles.

Portland's date falls the night before a Seattle stop at Showbox SoDo on Friday, November 20.
