Two Portland Police Bureau officers were sent to the hospital early Tuesday after a man they tried to arrest on a trespassing call attacked them in Northeast Portland's King Neighborhood.

Officers from PPB's North Precinct responded around 1:50 a.m. to reports of someone trespassing on private property in the 4100 block of Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, the bureau said. They asked the man to leave. He refused.

When officers moved to take him into custody, the man became combative and assaulted both of them, according to PPB.

Partial body camera footage released by the bureau shows officers ordering the suspect to leave or face arrest. The video captures a physical struggle, and in the footage one officer can be heard yelling, "Get off my taser. Get off my taser."

Officers eventually gained control and made the arrest.

Both officers were treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. PPB declined to specify the extent of those injuries, citing officer privacy.

The bureau identified the suspect as Yimer Funez-Cruz, 23, of Portland. Paramedics checked him at the scene before he was transported to the Multnomah County Detention Center.

Funez-Cruz was booked on eight charges: two counts of assault of a public safety officer, two counts of fourth-degree assault, second-degree assault, attempted first-degree theft, attempted felon in possession of a restricted weapon, and second-degree trespass.

Court records reviewed by OregonLive show Funez-Cruz was convicted of second-degree felonious assault and unlawful use of a weapon in December 2024. He was sentenced to 27 months in prison and 60 months of probation. He also had a prior conviction for interference with making a report and a 2023 DUII charge for which he entered a diversion program.

A warrant was issued for his arrest in June for an alleged probation violation, court records show. He was scheduled to appear in court the week of July 13 on the probation violation.

As of Tuesday, jail records showed Funez-Cruz remained at MCDC and had not yet appeared in court on the new charges.

Portland Police Chief Bob Day said he was relieved both officers are expected to recover.

"Every time our officers respond to a call or attempt to take someone into custody, they face the very real possibility of violence," Day said.
