Portland's Vanport Jazz Festival won't happen this year after organizers canceled the two-day event, citing ticket sales down as much as 60% from previous years.

But the rest of August is stacked with live music across the city's neighborhoods, including experimental shows, a Bach cello recital by candlelight and a cumbia album release party.

Vanport Jazz: what happened

The festival had been scheduled for Aug. 7–8 at the University of Portland, with a lineup featuring Mindi Abair, Eric Darius and Jeffrey Osborne. In a July 28 statement reported by KOIN, organizers said the economic climate made it impossible to deliver the event at their promised standard.

"After careful consideration, we have made the decision to cancel the event rather than deliver an event that falls short of our expectations," the festival said in that July 28 announcement.

The festival honors the jazz culture that flourished in North Portland after the 1948 Columbia River flood destroyed Vanport and displaced thousands of residents. Organizers said they hope to return in August 2027.

Creative Music Guild fills the experimental lane

Creative Music Guild artistic director Mike Gamble plays Dream House (412 NE Beech St.) on Wednesday, Aug. 12 at 8 p.m. with filmmaker/artist Devin Jane Febbroriello and guitarist Oleo.

The following week, CMG's Outset Series brings monologuist Joe von Appen and noise artist Billy to Swan Dive in Southeast Portland on Wednesday, Aug. 19.

Musicians and experimental artists take note: the 2026 Improvisation Summit of Portland application deadline is also Aug. 19. The summit runs Oct. 13–29 and is open to improvisers, sound artists and interdisciplinary performers. Applicants will hear back by Monday, Aug. 24.

Bach by candlelight in Northeast

Baroque by Candlelight, a series founded by Amadeus Chamber Orchestra founder Adam LaMotte, presents Canadian-American cellist Elinor Frey on Tuesday, Aug. 25 at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church in Northeast Portland. Frey will perform the first three of Bach's Suites for Solo Cello.

Cumbia weekend in Southeast

Orquestra Pacifico Tropical, Portland's 11-piece cumbia orchestra founded in 2012, celebrates the release of their third album, "El Poder," on Saturday, Aug. 29 at The Den (116 SE Yamhill St.). The band started writing the record at a cabin on the Oregon coast in November 2020, blending cumbia tradition with salsa and psychedelic Northwest sounds.

The night before, psychedelic cumbia newcomers Gata Galáctica play The Get Down in Southeast Portland on Friday, Aug. 28.
